Culatra Island
Culatra the fisherman's island...
The Culatra Island, in front of Olhão, is part of the Ria Formosa barrier island chain that stretches between Faro and Cacela Velha to the east of Tavira and protects the unique lagoon system against the strength of the Atlantic Ocean. Culatra island still preserves its roots from the fishing village and has a population of approximately 750 inhabitants. Access to Culatra is only by boat. Culatra is an island of people dedicated to the sea. When we disembark in Culatra we realize that we are in a place of fishermen. The village is endowed with several infrastructures and services. Access to Culatra Beach is done through a wooden walkway recently built according to the standards of the Ria Formosa National Park. Here you can see the rich flora of dune fields and numerous species of birds that live in these quiet spots, where the waters are warm and calm. After a two-hour walk east you come to Barra Grande, where you can appreciate the inviting sandy natural pools and a constantly changing landscape.
